Accessible Images for the Blind for Modern Astrophysics Textbook

Overview

The images in this webpage are tactile versions of graphical images in An Introduction to Modern Astrophysics, by Bradley W.Carroll and Dale A. Ostlie, Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, 1996. The images are created by the Tactile Graphics Project as a part of testing the Tactile Graphic Assistant research tool and the Automated Tactile Graphic workflow. The production is funded by the Washington Research Foundation (WRF) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

A majority of the images in the book are available, but some of photographic nature are not translated into tactile format.

Download Instructions

The images can be downloaded in entirety or per chapter, both in compressed zip file format. To download the images in entirety, save the complete.zip file below. Please make sure you have at least 2.9 GB of free space when decompressing the whole file. To download by the chapter, go to the proper chapter links. You can also preview the images of each chapter.

Adobe Illustrator CS and Braille29 font, downloadable below, are needed to properly view the files.

Printing Instructions

The images can be embossed with The Tiger Pro Embosser from ViewPlus Technologies.

Most of the images would fit on 11.5"x11" paper. A small number of images need to be embossed in large format (16" wide) paper. In Illustrator, go to File->Document Setup to view an image's dimensions. Then, in the print menu, select the proper paper size that would fit the image. If no existing paper size would fit, go to Printers and Faxes setting in Control Panel. Select File->Server Properties and create a form with the desired paper width and height.
